HOUJICHA FAQ
TSUBAKI / Houjicha tastes different from other Houjicha I’ve tried. Why is that?
Many of our customers say they love the “rich caramelly flavour, subtle umami and the roasty/smoky flavour” of TSUBAKI / Houjicha.
Our secret is actually in the unique roasting process of our green tea. We use a lower temperature, plus shorter roasting time to maintain all the natural, deep flavours in TSUBAKI / Houjicha (roasting green tea at high temperature for an extended period will end up killing the flavours, resulting in a burnt roasty flavour).
Does Houjicha contain caffeine?
TSUBAKI / Houjicha is a perfect alternative to coffee. Despite it having a roasty coffee flavour, it actually contains very low amounts of caffeine due to the special roasting process of green tea leaves. If you are sensitive to caffeine, try drinking TSUBAKI / Houjicha!
How many cups of Houjicha should I drink a day?
It is recommended to drink not more than 3 cups a day.
Can I use TSUBAKI / Houjicha in baking?
Of course! We recommend you to use TSUBAKI / Houjicha in any of your desserts or pastries. TSUBAKI / Houjicha is trusted and used by hundreds of our cafe and patisserie customers & clients worldwide.

HOUJICHA MILLE-FEUILLE WITH FRESH BERRIES
★★★★★
“The TSUBAKI / Houjicha differs from the Matcha in that the earthy, roasted flavour comes through more prominently – something we felt the need the showcase. We felt the TSUBAKI / Houjicha Powder added a depth of flavour that mimicked the savoury-sweet contrast we love in desserts, so the inspirations were endless with this one!”

VEGAN HOUJICHA PUDDING

“It was pretty easy, we find it to be more finely-milled which means it incorporated to other ingredients really well and even with such a small amount and amongst other strong flavours, it really can shine through and be distinct as well.”

HOUJICHA BUTTER CAKE
★★★★★
“It is unique subtle yet flavourful.
Adding the powder does not alter the texture of my cake and because the flavour is intense, you do not need a lot of it to bring out the flavour in my cake.”

HOUJICHA BROOKIES
★★★★★
“The roasted flavour was very strong in a good way so we wanted it to shine without being drowned by the dark chocolate brookie. A houjicha buttercream ended up being the perfect vehicle to carry the houjicha flavour while complementing the chewy dark chocolate cookie.”
