What motivates you to live a wellness-centered lifestyle?

I find happiness in giving back, helping people and sharing knowledge that could make a positive impact in other’s life. It wasn’t super easy for me to find fun and easy-to-digest wellness & lifestyle information that’s relatable in Malaysia when I first started my wellness journey. That’s one of the reasons that keeps me fueled to keep learning, take good care of my personal wellbeing and live a wellness-centered lifestyle, so that I could keep sharing and help people that needed help, as I understand how it feels. “The world doesn’t change by your words, it changes by your actions” I believe that if I’m not at my best, I can’t give my best.

You often share your home-yoga journey and about self-meditation on your IG. How does this change your lifestyle, state-of-mind or perspective in life?

Yoga is an important part of my wellness practice and lifestyle. I love how it works on balancing the mind and body at the same time. It has helped me to improve both my physical and mental health. I learned to be more self-aware and self-conscious in my daily life — that includes being more mindful in the words I speak towards others and myself, the food I eat, the things I consume emotionally, the way I make decisions and the mindset when I handle challenging situations. Practicing yoga asana and meditation definitely has helped me to be more grounded, grateful and self-content, which I think is one of the most beautiful parts of my wellness journey.

Any tips for viewers who are inspired and like to explore into a healthy lifestyle as you do?

I think it’s very important to first look into what works best for you. You can start by practicing awareness and being conscious about what you consume physically, mentally and emotionally. It could of course start with your personal diet, work with your food sensitivities and gut imbalances. It could also be finding out what type of physical movement that works better in your daily routines. Explore what makes you feel most connected to your highest-self. We are all bio-individuals, what works for others might not work for you. As you keep exploring and learning about your own body, listening to your physical and emotional needs, you will find what makes you feel and perform at your best. Wellness and healthy living is a personal journey, there’s neither timeline nor comparison. I hope you’ll cultivate compassion and happiness along your way.

How did you come up with this recipe? Why did you choose Matcha for this recipe?

It’s mid-autumn season! I find that it’s not very easy to find sugar-free and gluten-free mooncakes, so I thought that it would be nice to make my own version of a healthy and gut-friendly mooncake to give to my families and friends. Both rice flour and sweet potato I’m using in this recipe are high in resistant starch especially when it’s cooked and cooled, which is a type of carbohydrate that isn't absorbed by the large intestine and works as a prebiotic that promotes gut health. The high theanine content of YURI / Matcha together with goji berries, not only makes a unique flavor but also makes a superfood combo that gives you an antioxidants boost.

What do you like about working with YURI / Matcha powder when creating your recipes?

I love the color and taste combination of green YURI / Matcha and purple sweet potato. Matcha is one of my favorite mooncake flavors and I believe it to many people as well. The pleasant bitter undertones of YURI / Matcha really balance out the sweetness of mooncake, also brings a refreshing taste note and texture that makes this mooncake doesn’t taste heavy at all.

RECIPE

Matcha Sweet Potato Mooncake

Makes 10 mini mooncake (50 g mold size).

Preparation time: 1 hour
Chilling time: 2 hours
Total time: 3 hours

Ingredients

Mooncake skin
50 g Glutinous rice flour
45 g Rice flour
20 g Sweet potato flour (or tapioca flour)
5 - 8 drops liquid stevia (or any sweetener of your choice)
100 ml Warm water
60 ml Macadamia milk
20 ml Coconut cooking oil (or any neutral flavor oil)
2 tsp YURI / Matcha powder

Filling
220 g Purple sweet potato (about 2 medium size)
2 - 3 tsp Monk fruit sweetener
10g Goji berries
2 - 3 tsp Extra virgin coconut oil



Method To Assemble

  1. To prepare fillings, peel and dice sweet potatoes, mix together monk fruit sweetener in a heat proof container.
  2. To prepare mooncake skin, whisk matcha and some warm water with a chasen whisk then mix all wet ingredients to dry ingredients in a separate heat proof container till smooth and no lumps.
  3. Steam both filling and mooncake skin mixture in a steamer for about 20 minutes. You can stick a chopstick in mooncake skin dough to check the doneness and sweet potatoes should be soft enough to mash.
  4. Gently loosen up mooncake skin dough with a spatula, remove excess water if any, set aside, let it cool enough to touch. It’s easier to work with when cooled down.
  5. Mash sweet potatoes with a fork or spatula, mix in coconut oil and goji berries. Portion and roll it into 10 sweet potato balls (about 16 - 18g each)
  6. Sprinkle some rice flour on mooncake skin dough, use a spoon to portion and roll out 10 mooncake skin (about 25-27 g each). Coat the spoon and your hand with rice flour to work with the dough.
  7. Wrap sweet potato filling with mooncake skin, shape it into a round ball and press with mooncake mould. Sprinkle more rice flour if needed.
  8. Chill mooncake in the fridge overnight or at least 2 hours for better texture.
